Highly-rated draft prospect Dougie Cochrane has produced an impressive performance in just his second game back from a long-term injury.
The 18-year-old collected a team-high 30 disposals playing across half-back for Port Adelaide in its heavy SANFL loss to West Adelaide at Richmond Oval last weekend.
Cochrane also finished with 10 rebound 50s, six marks and six tackles in a performance which provided another glimpse of his massive potential.
After spending time in defence late in his return match a week earlier, Cochrane was again used in the backline and given greater freedom to get involved in the play.
He was entrusted with kick-in duties and regularly helped the Magpies move the ball out of defence despite West Adelaide dominating the contest.
His ability to gain territory, use the ball and continue competing under pressure were among the positives to come from an otherwise difficult afternoon for Port Adelaide.
"(Cochrane) was one of the shining lights for us today," Port Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan said post-match.
"Today was a little glimpse of what Dougie can do... there's still a few little things in his game that we need to improve, but if that's what he's doing in his second game after a long stint out, it's pretty positive for us."
Cochrane has shown his versatility throughout his junior career, spending time as a key forward, while also aspiring to eventually play through the midfield.
His latest performance showed another side to his game, with the athletic youngster recording 10 intercept possessions and providing plenty of drive from the defensive half.
The Port Adelaide Next Generation Academy prospect also had the opportunity to share the field with older brother Tom, who is already on Port Adelaide's AFL list.
Fellow NGA prospect Zackariah Young also featured for the Magpies and was praised for his effort and competitiveness.
Cochrane has two matches remaining this season as he continues to build his match fitness following his extended absence.
It was also a productive weekend for several other highly-rated Indigenous prospects.
Northern Territory youngster Sonny Smiler made a strong impression in a one-off appearance for the Bendigo Pioneers, kicking an early goal and celebrating with a backflip.
The AFL Academy prospect brought speed and energy across the ground, with his high-speed running among the features of his performance despite the Pioneers suffering a heavy defeat.
Meanwhile, Carlton father-son prospect Cody Walker gathered an equal game-high 29 disposals, eight marks and kicked a goal in the Blues' narrow loss to St Kilda in the VFL.
