A new program to build home and life skills for families and communities in Central Australia has been strengthen with Federal Government support.

Announced on Thursday, the Safe and Healthy Homes Skills Development Program will receive $4.9 million to deliver hands-on and practical support to build useful skills in areas such as cooking, meal preparation, home maintenance and parenting.

Supporting the remote communities of Papunya, Haasts Bluff, and Mt Liebig, the goal of the new community-led program — to be delivered by Ngurratjuta/Pmara Ntjarra Aboriginal Corporation —is to support healthier homes and safer families.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, Malarndirri McCarthy, said the Federal Government is proud of its commitment to invest in the people of remote Australia.

"Programs like these are about strengthening families in communities like Papunya, Haasts Bluff, and Mt Liebig," Senator McCarthy said.

"This program is part of our long-term investment to improve the lives of people in Central Australia and ensure no one is left behind."

Federal Minister for Social Services, Tanya Plibersek, said the program supports local decision making by mob.

"We know that when local communities make decisions about what will work best for them, we get results. That's why we're investing in practical, hands-on programs like the Safe and Healthy Homes Skills Development Program," Minister Plibersek said.

"This investment will help create the healthy, safe homes for families in Papunya, Haasts Bluff and Mt Liebig that they need to thrive.

"The best solutions for First Nations communities come when they're led by locals, and that's what this program is all about."

The program is funded through the $30 million Strengthening Families and Communities Partnership, part of the Federal Government's A Better, Safer Future for Central Australia Plan.
