Two AFL clubs playing under the banner of Traditional place names will come face to face for the first time during Sir Doug Nicholls Round in 2023.

Rather than Port Adelaide hosting Melbourne, it will be Yartapuulti Football Club lining up against Narrm Football Club at the Adelaide Oval on May 19.

The news comes after the Power announced the shift to acknowledge the language of Karuna Traditional Owners for the lands around their home.

The Demons played as Narrm in 2022 - the first AFL club to make the switch.

Yartapuulti will just pip Walyalup (Fremantle), who play Narrm the following week, to mark the significant leap forward in the recognition of language within the league.

The Kaurna Language Committee, Kaurna Senior and past player for port Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Murrutya O'Brien, and the club's Aboriginal Programs Manager and AFLW Player development coach, Braedon Talbot were part of the consultation process for the rebrand.

"In Kaurna, 'Yarta' means place or land and 'Puulti' means sleep or death, which is the name the Kaurna people gave the land around the Port River," Uncle Mickey explained.

"As a Kaurna person that was born here on this Peninsula, I am thankful and grateful to Port Adelaide, not only for the opportunity they gave me as a player at this wonderful club but also this opportunity to share my culture and this connection to this place being Yartapuulti – the place of sleep".

With the name comes a new logo.

Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri artist Brooke Rigney-Lively created the design in collaboration with First Nations owned and managed creative agency Ochre Dawn.

Songlines around the River Torrens, which runs beside the Port River and Adelaide Oval, and the kangaroo and ibis tracks from Karuna dreaming stories surround the traditional crest.

Port Adelaide chief executive Matthew Richardson said the club has a proud history of Indigenous players, initiatives and education programs, something they're proud to commemorate.

"This initiative is about celebrating Indigenous culture and the important role it plays in Australia's game.

"The opportunity for Yartapuulti Football Club to open Sir Doug Nicholls Round against Narrm Football Club and the significance of that moment is not lost on us.

"It is a great privilege and honour, and for that to also include the 550 students who'll complete the Santos Aboriginal Power Cup in that week makes it even more special".

Port's AFLW and SANFL sides will also adopt the name change for their Indigenous Round/First Nations round games in 2023, and will continue the tradition annually.

Yartapuulti host Narrm in the first week of Sir Doug Nicholls round, round 10, next Friday.
