Indigenous community leader and City of Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon has come forward as the complainant at the centre of the sexual assault charges against Mick Mundine.

Mr Mundine was arrested on Thursday over allegations involving a 15-year-old girl, alleged to have taken place in Redfern in 1986.

The Aboriginal Housing Company chief executive was charged with sexual assault, and sexual assault of a person under the age of 16.

Ms Weldon wrote on a social media post on Friday that it was "never too late to speak up".

"I have carried this for 40 years. It is time to no longer carry it," she said.

"I came forward for the children who are here now and to break the culture of silence that allows abuse to continue.

"To other survivors of abuse in its many forms, you are not alone. It is never too late to speak up and seek support."

Cr Weldon, a longtime First Nations community advocate, became the first Aboriginal councillor to sit on the City of Sydney council when elected in 2021.

Mr Mundine was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, October 14.
