Prominent Sydney Aboriginal leader Mick Mundine has been charged with two sexual assault offences following an investigation.

The 79-year-old chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company was arrested in Redfern about 7am on Thursday.

NSW Police confirmed a 79-year-old man had been charged with sexual assault - assault and commit act of indecency, and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age. The charges relate to allegations involving a girl who was 15 at the time of the alleged offences in June 1986.

Mundine was taken to Newtown Police Station following his arrest, where he was formally charged, The West Australian reports.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, October 14.

Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate the alleged historical sexual assaults in Redfern.

"Following extensive inquiries, about 7am today (Thursday 8 October 2026) strike force detectives arrested a 79-year-old man in Redfern," NSW Police said in a statement.

Mundine has been a longstanding figure in Sydney's Aboriginal community through his work advocating for housing and development in Redfern.

As Aboriginal Housing Company chief executive he has overseen major community housing initiatives, including the $70 million Pemulwuy Project, which was completed in 2023.
