After early indications of serious injury, Brisbane Lions defender Keidean Coleman has ruptured his ACL, the club confirmed on Saturday.

Coleman was helped from the ground after appearing to hyperextending his left knee when tackled mid-way through a kicking motion as the seconds ticked down to the halftime break.

He was subbed out of the match, with the Blues stirring to claw back from a 46-point deficit for a one-point win.

Post-match, Lions coach Chris Fagan indicated a "likely" horror-start to 2024 for the 23-year-old on assessment from staff.

Brisbane confirmed the news on Saturday after Coleman underwent scans.

"It's really disappointing news for Keidean, especially in the first game after a strong pre-season and an impressive finals campaign last year," Lions general manager of football, Danny Daly said.

Daly expressed the club's faith in Coleman continuing his rise after what will be a lengthy rehabilitation.

"Kiddy is an extremely positive and calm person, so I am confident those traits will no doubt help him get through his recovery over the coming months.

"He of course has the full support of everyone at our club and we will continue to be right with him every step of the way."

Daly acknowledged Lions fans who had reached with messages of support for Coleman.
