AFL Cape York House is set to host Me. The Exhibition 'Culture' for its second year, focusing on culture and identity.

The event will take place on Saturday, 9 November at the Pullman International Cairns, showcasing student self-portraits that capture personal journeys and cultural pride.

The first exhibition in November 2023 was a notable success, allowing students from AFL Cape York House – For Boys and AFL Cape York House – For Girls to share their stories and artistic expressions with the Cairns community, peers, and families.

This year, 74 students will participate, each presenting a self-portrait that reflects their unique experiences and heritage.

Umpila man and Cultural Support Officer at AFL Cape York, Bernard Singleton invites viewers to witness the powerful stories of which these young people tell.

"In its second year of exhibition, we invite viewers to witness the transformative journey of young individuals who travel from remote communities to boarding, leaving behind the familiar embrace of home and family," Mr Singleton said.

The exhibition provides a platform for students to explore identity through photography, highlighting their transformative journeys.

These students, aged 12-18, live and study in Cairns for more than 40 weeks a year, separated from their families and communities.

This transition is challenging, and the exhibition underscores their resilience, identity and cultural pride.

Each student's portrait will be accompanied by a statement explaining the intent behind their work and how their cultural roots shape who they are.

"This transition is not merely a physical relocation; it is a profound exploration of identity that intertwines rich cultural heritage with new experiences," Mr Singleton said.

"These young people navigate the complexities of walking in two worlds – honouring the traditions and teachings of their communities while embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.

"Each image is captivating, yet serves as a testament to their unique stories, reflecting the strength whether bold or quiet and the resilience that emerges from their journeys."

AFL Cape York House engages students in activities that foster leadership, collaboration, and pride in their identities.

This exhibition embodies their mantra, "This is me," showcasing the strength they draw from their culture as they adapt to new surroundings.

The public is invited to view Me. The Exhibition 'Culture', from 11am to 5pm on 9 November 2024, free of charge at the Pullman International Cairns.
