A 17-year-old girl has been found dead in a remote Aboriginal community in East Arnhem Land, with Northern Territory Police treating her death as suspicious.

Police found the girl in residential housing in Galiwin'ku — a Yolŋu community on Elcho Island — after receiving a report shortly after 11 am that she was unconscious.

"Local police, assisted by staff from the local health clinic, attended the scene, where she was declared deceased," NT Police said in a statement.

"A 34-year-old man has since been arrested, with detectives from the Serious Crime Section continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death."

The ABC reported NT Police have confirmed the 34-year-old and the deceased girl were known to each other and are treating the death as a domestic violence incident.
