St Kilda will assess Bradley Hill across the next 48hrs as the 29-year-old battles a knee complaint suffered against West Coast last weekend.
Hill played out the match but was sent for scans on his return to Melbourne to gauge the extent of the injury.
He'll be tested at St Kilda training on Thursday leading up to their season-shaping tie with Melbourne on Saturday night.
After a hot start to 2023, the Saints have wobbled through the middle portion of the season.
In fifth spot, and six points clear of ninth-placed Geelong, their performance against the Dees will give some indication of their ability to push for a deep September.
Hill has averaged 21 disposals this season, and been a contributor to the Saints attacking drive.
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon expects Hill is confident hill will play alongside fellow uncertainty Seb Ross.
"They'll be doing the warm up. We think they're probably going to play but the scan has basically cleared of structural damage so it's just a bit of probably a twist some bit of trauma potentially," Lyon said on Thursday.
"We're quite optimistic but we won't know until the back into tonight and tomorrow morning, probably how they pull up after what they do today."
After a disappointing display against the struggling Eagles last week, Lyon conceded the team's form leads to complex selection calls.
He said Jack Peris is "in the mix" to make his debut this weekend.
St Kilda face Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
