The Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association (AIDA) has announced the appointment of Phillip Saunders as Chief Executive Officer for the next 12 months.
Mr Saunders commenced in the role on 24 August and was formally introduced to members and partners at the AIDA 2026 Conference currently underway on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar in Boorloo / Perth.
He is a Bunganditj, Gunditjmara and Narungga man who brings more than 25 years of experience spanning Aboriginal affairs, executive leadership, governance, law, health, justice, and community engagement.
"I am looking forward to working closely with the Board and staff to provide experienced leadership, support the delivery of AIDA's strategic priorities, and maintain our focus on members and communities," Mr Saunders said at the conference.
"For the next year, I will be focusing on the implementation of AIDA's new Strategic Plan, ensuring that we provide a space where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members can feel safe, heard and be celebrated."
Mr Saunders' recent roles include Senior Consultant with Open Dialogue Engagement and CEO of Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. At Tandanya, he led organisational reform, strengthened governance and supported the delivery of major events and community initiatives. He is also a current Director at social enterprise Junction Australia.
AIDA said on Friday morning that Mr Saunders brings "a collaborative leadership style grounded in open dialogue, strong relationships and respect for the knowledge and expertise of those around him".
AIDA President Dr Olivia O'Donoghue said the Board is "delighted to welcome Phillip to AIDA as our Chief Executive Officer".
"His experience, judgement and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will make a valuable contribution to AIDA over the next 12 months," she said.
"Phillip will focus on empowering and elevating our members to lead transformative change from within health systems, advancing self-determination to shape health care that is culturally responsive, equitable and just."
AIDA said it welcomes Mr Saunders' leadership as the Association progresses its Strategic Plan and continue to advocate for the holistic health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
