Hawks favourite Jarman Impey has turned down free agency and appears likely to end his AFL career in brown and gold after signing a three-year extension with the club.

Impey, 30, has gone to higher and higher levels in recent seasons and become a key cog in Hawthorn's resurgence to premiership contention.

The Yorta Yorta defender's new deal will keep him at the Hawks through to the end of 2029.

Impey notched his 150th game for the club earlier this year, having brought up 200 AFL games early last season.

As part of his resigning announcement, Hawks list manager Mark McKenzie said Impey's influence around the club "cannot be overstated". So far this season he's average over 23 touches and nearly 500 metres gained per outing.

Impey joined the Hawks ahead of the 2018 season following four years at Port Adelaide.

"Jarman's importance to our Club cannot be overstated - the energy, enthusiasm and leadership he provides our group is enormous," McKenzie said.

"It's no surprise that Jarman just keeps getting better, his career-best year ahead of his 31st birthday next month is a result of his continued professionalism and dedication to his craft.

"His experience, composure and line-breaking speed are something we will continue to lean on heavily over the next three years as we continue to push towards our next premiership."

Impey was due to end the year as a free agent for the first time.

The veteran is often sighted as First Nations leader within the competition, in addition to his on-field exploits.
