Recently-elected Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns has announced his cabinet for Labor's first time in office since 2011, naming David Harris as the incoming Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty on Tuesday.
The member for Wyong, on the state's Central Coast, has held his seat since 2015 after a single term between 2007 to 2011 and previously served the role as shadow minister.
For the first time in the state's history the incoming cabinet is made up of 50 percent women.
On Tuesday morning Mr Harris said he was "honoured" to serve in the role among additional responsibilities on his portfolio.
"Last night, I was honoured to receive a call from Premier Chris Minns offering me a place in his NSW Cabinet," he wrote to Facebook.
"I thank Premier Minns for his confidence. It's such a huge honour that would not have been possible without the Wyong Electorate having faith in me. The recent election result was so amazing."
Mr Harris assumes the role from former minister Ben Franklin.
Ahead of the election in January, then-leader of the opposition, now-Premier Minns called NSW's journey towards Treaty long overdue.
"That conversation with First Nations people must begin," he said.
"We cannot be one of only two states in the entire country that hasn't begun a process to treaty in Australia."
Mr Minns committed $5 million dollars for consultations with First Nations peoples on an agreement and steps toward "genuine reconciliation".
Mr Harris will be sworn in as Minister on Wednesday.
