Former federal minister Ken Wyatt AM has been appointed the new Chair of Rock Art Australia, a national non-profit research foundation dedicated to funding the research and understanding Australia's rock art heritage.

Mr Wyatt, a Noongar, Yamatji and Wongi man, was the first Indigenous person elected to the federal House of Representatives and became Australia's first Indigenous federal minister in 2015.

The Foundation said that as Rock Art Australia's first Indigenous Chair, Mr Wyatt will bring "Indigenous leadership and cultural knowledge to the forefront" of their mission.

"Our rock art tells the story of our people, our ancestors, and our country," Mr Wyatt said after taking on the role recently.

"It is a privilege to help guide Rock Art Australia's work so that we understand through scientific research and Aboriginal knowledge the history of human habitation in Australia and that Indigenous voices remain central in research for generations to come."

Rock Art Australia said the appointment reflects their commitment to "ensuring that Aboriginal voices guide the future of rock art research and preservation".

Interim CEO Cas Bennetto said the organisation's mission has "always been to research, promote and protect rock art through research and Indigenous collaboration".

"The appointment of an Indigenous Chair ensures that cultural authority and academic expertise work hand in hand," she said.

Outgoing Chair John Morrison said Rock Art Australia's board was delighted Mr Wyatt has agreed to step up as Chair following his appointment as director in 2023, and is "confident his appointment will ensure that Aboriginal voices guide the future of rock art research in Australia".

Rock Art Australia collaborates with Traditional Owners, researchers, and universities across the country to advance knowledge, protect heritage, and celebrate Australia's unique cultural history.
