A young Cherbourg woman has been selected for Queensland's Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, a statewide initiative which builds leadership and cultural skills among First Nations youth.

Jenakai Simpson is part of the 2025 cohort, which spent the week in Brisbane learning from Elders, community leaders, mentors and Members of Parliament.

The program aims to strengthen young people's confidence, their understanding of cultural identity and their ability to lead in their families and communities.

Participants also worked with First Nations GP and health advocate Brad Murphy, who has supported the program for many years.

Dr Murphy said the group showed strong commitment and potential.

"These deadly young First Nations leaders are stepping up, speaking up and showing what's possible when communities support their young people. It's a privilege to walk alongside them," he said.

Cherbourg Mayor Bruce Simpson received photos and updates from Dr Murphy as the program progressed.

The council said it was proud to see a local young person representing the community and thanked Dr Murphy for his continued encouragement of emerging leaders.

Applications for QIYLP draw young people from across Queensland who want to develop leadership skills and contribute to their communities.

Ms Simpson and the rest of the 2025 cohort will continue their training throughout the year.
