Parts of an Aboriginal community in Townsville are expected to be without power and telecommunications for up to 24 hours as torrential rains and flooding continue to impact the region.
At around 7:30pm local time on Sunday, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council issued an emergency alert advising interruptions are expected on the southern part of the island from approximately 8pm on Monday morning.
It comes after power was lost across the entire island, the Council reports, over the weekend as a landslide cut lines.
There have been road closures and food supplies are said to be running low.
According to a community update on Sunday evening, the island remains without power.
Efforts to restore power and communications are expected to begin from Monday afternoon, which is also intended to ensure community water supplies following damage to pumps at the local treatment plant.
Palm Island (Bwgcolman) sits 65 kilometres north of Townsville off the Queensland coast.
The community has been regularly updated with warnings, advice and developing circumstances amid intense wind and rainfall.
Mayor Alfred Lacey, also chair of Palm Island Local Disaster Management Group, advised the community over 800mm of rain had hit the island in recent days, with the weather conditions expected to continue into the week.
Interruptions to barges have interrupted food supplies.
Residents have been told to remain at home unless it is an emergency.
"I know that with no barges due to the weather it means we are getting low on food supplies. There is plenty of frozen food available," Mr Lacey said on Sunday.
"Please know we are working with the state government to get additional supplies of food and other items into town.
"For now, please make the most of the supplies you have at home.
"This is a very significant weather issue."
An SMS and voicemail issued to mobile phone numbers of residents in the Palm Island Local Government Area is understood to have been arranged to inform the community to a lengthy update of current circumstances.
The next update is expected following a Palm Island Local Disaster Management Group meeting at 9am Monday morning.
It is reported personal hardship grants are being arranged.
