The Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Water Interests (CAWI) is seeking new members from Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria to join its advisory body.

This initiative is aimed at enhancing advocacy for the inland water rights, values, and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across Australia.

CAWI provides a platform to influence water governance, collaborating with governments and stakeholders at national, state, and territory levels.

Wiradjiri Nyemba woman and CAWI acting chair, Dr Virginia Marshall, has previously highlighted the importance of recognising Indigenous knowledge in environmental management.

"My vision is for an Australia that recognises the national treasure it shares in the world's oldest living Indigenous culture... to learn about the unique Indigenous land and water knowledge systems that will inform Australia's climate change response," she told Better Futures.

Members will play a vital role in ensuring Indigenous voices are integral to water management and reform initiatives.

The committee is inviting applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples with ancestral links to their communities in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria.

Applicants should demonstrate a passion for driving positive change and a commitment to advancing the water rights and interests of Indigenous communities.

Candidates with expertise in areas such as water science, management and leadership, strategic governance, policy and planning, advocacy, and cultural water rights are encouraged to apply.

Applicants' experience in engaging with government and water stakeholders will be particularly valued.

CAWI operates as an independent advisory body, contributing to world-leading water reform initiatives.

Its members provide guidance on policy development and strategic planning, advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values in water management.

The positions are open exclusively to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Applicants must submit a statement of claims (no more than two pages) addressing their skills and experience, as outlined in the CAWI member position description.

A current CV (maximum four pages) with contact details for two professional referees is also required.

Applications close at 11:59 pm AEST on Friday, 28 February, with late submissions not accepted.

Interested individuals can email the CAWI Executive Officer at [email protected] for further details.
