Jonathan Lewis Ford appeared in Perth Magistrate's Court Friday morning and pled not guilty to one charge of assault causing bodily harm.
It has been alleged that on the night of 15 July at the NAIDOC Ball in Perth Mr Ford assaulted Aidan Collard.
Social media posts by members of Mr Collard's family showed images of him in hospital with a neck brace after the incident. He reportedly suffered a broken jaw.
Mr Ford's lawyer told the court on Friday that the defence would "be in a position to call two to four witnesses".
The prosecution flagged that it would call four police witnesses and "at least a couple" of civilian witnesses.
Mr Ford's lawyer noted that he had not yet seen CCTV footage of the event.
The court adjourned the matter to 7 November, with Mr Ford's bail extended until that time.
