Regional events are about more than just coming together; they're chances to honour, uplift and platform Aboriginal people and voices, NSW Aboriginal Land Council chair Raymond Kelly says.

In 2024-25, NSWALC processed the highest number of applications they've ever received in one year for its Regional Events Grants Program.

Support is eligible to "organisations and events that have Aboriginal participation and are of regional significance for Aboriginal peoples in NSW", the Land Council states, for events which must support and promote Aboriginal culture and/or sporting achievement.

The Regional Event Grants Program is part of the broader Community Benefits Scheme.

Grants of up to $25,000 per application are available.

"These events are incredibly important for our Local Aboriginal Land Council's on the ground and we are honoured to play a small part in bringing these to life across the State," Cr Kelly said.

The peak body recently announced the 22 events supported with the initiative, totalling over $150,000 delivered via the program.

More than a third of all applications received have successfully acquired a grant in the 2025-26 funding round.

NSWALC said the new highest ever number of applicants coming in was "an inspiring show of interest and community initiative".

Among those 22 were a number of NAIDOC events across the state, from Koori Kids School Iniatives and family days to week-long events linked with Aboriginal medical services and sports gala days.

Others to come include Moogahlin Performing Arts' Baiames Ngunnhu Festival, the NSW Aboriginal Bowls Carnival 2026, Greater Western Sydney Aboriginal Golf Championships, Kangaroo Festival with Casino Boolangle LALC, Gamilaraay Spirit with Yuluwirri Maayirr Rural Education Through Art Corporation and Winter on the Wambuul with Bathurst LALC.

In September, grants will help support the Lismore Aboriginal Knockout and Blacktown Red Belly Warriors Knockout.

"These events honour and uplift Aboriginal cultures and sporting excellence. They platform Aboriginal voices and bring our communities together for moments of regional significance on Country," Cr Kelly said.

"We are looking forward to seeing mob enjoy these events throughout the year."
