The highly anticipated debut album titled Lovesick by YNG Martyr, a talented Wiradjuri artist based in Naarm, is set to drop next month.

Following the success of his recent single Frostbite, which now has its place on triple j radio, YNG Martyr's Lovesick, releasing August 11, also explores new territories with melodic pop moments and intimate, acoustic-driven tracks.

Among the standout songs on the album is Where We Started, which will be the focus track upon release.

Produced in collaboration with acclaimed producer Tasker (known for working with artists like Alison Wonderland, Nooky, and Maribelle), Lovesick delves into YNG Martyr's unique and melodic approach to hip-hop.

The album features a diverse range of sounds, incorporating nostalgic punk elements in tracks like Hate U, soulful stripped-back piano ballads such as Colder and infectious pop sensibilities in As I Should.

National Indigenous Times spoke with the 24-year-old musician on the album, gaining an insight on the upcoming release.

YNG Martyr noted the humble beginnings of the album after a few back-and-forths on Instagram with Logan M, a producer from Melbourne.

"I thought this kids crazy talented and that was Logan M. He's the guy who's produced this entire album with me," he said.

"So we just ended up spewing out this entire project.... Then we made one, two, three, four tracks and we're like 'well this is an EP'."

It was shortly after this time YNG Martyr met Tasker, another talented producer who he dubbed "an absolutely cooked unit", who helped put the finishing touches and polishing on the album.

"I linked up with him, he added a lot of the production to the album and we got it to a point where we are super happy with it," YNG Martyr said.

YNF Martyr skilfully blends hard-headed rapping with more sombre singing, making use of both samples and live instrumentation.

Remaining incredibly humble, his efforts thus far have yielded him more than 1.1 million monthly listeners across the globe, predominantly in the United States and Canada. Though, he is hopeful to foster a larger Australian audience as he continues to grow as an artist.

"Hopefully this album really sets me aside from the pack and shows people who I am as and what I do," he said.

"Australia as of very recently has start to flip and really support my shit which is really cool, it's been amazing."

Additionally, the album includes collaborations with emerging talent including YNG One and established Australian hip-hop veteran Allday.

Reflecting on working with YNG Martyr, Allday said he enjoyed his time working on multiple tracks with him and YNG Martyr's unique approach to the music industry.

"He's a really funny guy, chaotic and high energy," Allday said.

"He's so outside the industry box - he got those streams himself using his guerilla marketing type of thing.

"A really creative guy in that way and I've seen him write and record a verse for me.

"There's no limit on how far he can go, I'm excited for him."

Echoing the sentiment, YNG Martyr said "People don't give Tom (Allday) enough credit what he's done for Australian music."

YNG Martyr has exciting live performances lined up. Later this month, he will be supporting American breakout star Iann Dior in shows at Sydney and Melbourne.

"This is my album launch party for my debut album. It's going to be a mad time, custom cocktails and that," he said.

"For so long I've been the only person to listen to this project, even if people hate it...'I'll be like 'uh it's finally out there in the world.'"

Lovesick promises to be an engaging and dynamic collection, showcasing YNG Martyr's versatility and unique blend of rap and pop influences.

Fans and music enthusiasts alike have much to look forward to with this upcoming release and YNG Martyr's upcoming live performances.
