Taryn Lee and Mark Munnich have been appointed by the federal government as directors of the board of Outback Stores Pty. Ltd.
Outback Stores works to improve access to affordable, healthy food for Indigenous communities, particularly in remote areas, through the provision of food supply, store management and support services in 55 locations across Australia.
A Yawuru woman from Broome, Ms Lee has led the design and development of social policy and programs, and reforms in health, justice and Aboriginal affairs while promoting self-determination to improve outcomes for First Nations people.
She has previously chaired the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission board and is currently a board director at Parks Victoria and deputy chairperson at Nyamba Buru Yawuru.
Mr Munnich, a descendent of the Yawuru, Yued, and Gunggandji peoples, born and raised on Larrakia Country in Darwin, has worked in the Aboriginal Community-Controlled sector for more than 10 years to improve Aboriginal health and wellbeing, supporting and advocating for social justice access and equity.
He is currently a legal counsel for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and board director for the North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy congratulated the pair on their appointments.
"Their experience in social policy, justice reform and Aboriginal health will bring valuable perspectives to the Outback Stores Board as it continues its important work in remote First Nations communities," Senator McCarthy said.
Ms Lee and Mr Munnich will serve the board on three-year terms on a part-time basis.
