Denise Andrews has spent her life giving back to the Fitzroy Valley in Western Australia's Kimberley region, the community where she grew up. This week, that community returned their appreciation.

On January 26, Ms Andrews was named the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley's Community Citizen of the Year, recognising decades of service across local organisations including Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation, Karrayilly Adult Education Centre and Bunuba Aboriginal Corporation.

Ms Andrews told the National Indigenous Times she was honoured by the recognition.

"This award reflects the work happening in our community every day, and my commitment to supporting our people — especially women and children," she said.

"I also want to say a big thank you to Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal corporation, Karrayili Adult Education centre for their ongoing support.

In a statement, the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley said the award recognised Ms Andrews' "outstanding contribution to the community".

Ms Andrews work is far from over, she remains dedicated to building strength in the Fitzroy Valley for generations to come.

"The most empowering thing is bringing communities together, so we can build a strong future together," she said.
