Sixth Indigenous death in custody in under two months

: Please note: This story contains reference to someone who has died.   An Aboriginal man has died in custody at Cessnock Correctional Centre in New South Wales. The 37-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell around 10am on Tuesday morning. He was pronounced dead at 11.15am The man’s cause of death is yet to be determined. A spokesperson for Corrective Services NSW said they will be investigating the incident and that all deaths in custody are subject to coronial inquest. The death will be the sixth death in custody in less than two months and the fourth in NSW alone. More than 475 Aboriginal people have died in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. The news of the death in custody at Cessnock Correctional Centre comes the same day as the inquest into the 2016 death in custody of Aboriginal man Wayne Fella Morrison continues in South Australia.
