First Nations Foundation empowering Indigenous people to take control of their finances

Australian Indigenous financial organisation, First Nations Foundation, is launching a series of outreach and educational events around the country to empower First Nations people to take control of their finances.

First Nations Foundation (FNF) Financial Wellness Week, which kicks off in Redfern and Western Sydney from April 19-21, gives Indigenous people the chance to discuss money matters with financial industry providers and government departments.

Attendees can speak to financial experts about a range of topics including tax, Centrelink support, superannuation, and any banking issues.

According to FNF chief executive Phil Usher, despite the high-rate of First Nations employment, many Indigenous Australians are ashamed to ask for assistance around money issues.

"A culturally appropriate delivery of financial information is at the pinnacle of First Nations Foundation's values," Mr Usher said.

"Culture is at the heart of everything we do, from our online literacy programs like My Money Dream, to events like Financial Wellness Week.

"Understanding the Indigenous perception and experience of money and family responsibilities can only be gained through lived experiences."

FNF Project Lead Melanie Noble said this event was a great opportunity for First Nations people to have conversations about finance with younger family members.

She said the events were not all about getting your finances in order.

"We encourage everyone to bring their families and come for a yarn; enjoy the free sausage sizzle and get positive outcomes for your money," she said Ms Noble.

"We hope that people can share this event with their networks and community to empower other Indigenous Australians to take control of their financial future.

"Engaging with your bank or super fund can make such a huge difference to your financial situation - we're hoping for this to happen on the day and that it helps reduce pressure on people's everyday finances, which will make family life easier."

Attendees should bring photo ID and any financial documents, including outstanding debts, overdue bills, tax documents and bank statements.
