Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man Otis Hope Carey has been named the 2025 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day Ambassador.

Held annually August 4, Children's Day is an opportunity for all Australians to show support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and to celebrate the vital role that culture, community, and family play in their lives.

Mr Hope Carey — a celebrated artist and former professional surfer — said he was honoured to take on the ambassador role.

A father of three, he holds a deep connection to his culture and community and is passionate about the future of Indigenous children.

"Children's Day is a day about all of us — young and old — being wrapped in Aboriginal language and culture and being able to soak up the knowledge and wisdom of our Elders and ancestors," Mr Hope Carey said.

"It's an opportunity to celebrate our kids, embrace our culture, and connect with Country, there's nothing more important than that for our young ones."

SNAICC – National Voice for our Children, the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, announced Mr Hope Carey as this year's ambassador.

Chief Executive Catherine Liddle said he embodied the spirit of this year's theme: Little Footsteps, Big Future.

"Otis is not only a powerful artist, but also a storyteller, a father, and someone who shows our children what's possible when you're strong in culture and community," Ms Liddle said.

"He has a beautiful connection to the Early Childhood Centre we will be [at for] Children's Day this year, Kulai Preschool Aboriginal Corporation, as both a previous attendee and where his mother, Aunty Julie Carey, continues to lead as Director."

Ms Liddle, an Arrernte/Luritja woman from Central Australia, added: "The day will be celebrated across the nation by thousands of children and hundreds of communities, early years services, schools and play groups."
