Acclaimed Yorta Yorta and Wurundjeri (Woiwurrung) writer, actor and producer Tony Briggs presents 'Address to the Nations', a new work developed with artist and producer David Pledger, this Tuesday night, June 23, in Canberra.

The digital art installation imagines an alternative Australia shaped by First Nations voices, histories and leadership as a way to envisage better futures.

Briggs and Pledger's work touches on current themes and experiences around racism and the telling of history, and invites conversation around the kind of futures we wish to create and who has the agency and authority to build them.

Created through a residency with the ANU School of Cybernetics, 'Address to the Nations' forms part of Tomorrow's Pasts, an ongoing creative project exploring alternative Australian histories through First Nations perspectives. Through storytelling and creative practice, 'Address to the Nations' places First Nations knowledge, perspectives and leadership at the centre of conversations about Australia's past, present and future.

Briggs said the work responds to a long history of First Nations stories being framed by others.

"For too long, others have shaped the national narrative of First Nations peoples. 'Address to the Nations' shifts that lens, placing First Nations voices at the centre of a story we have always held," he said.

"Carrying the world's oldest continuous living narrative, this project speaks to both our past and our future while offering a contemporary model for First Nations-led storytelling, grounded in sovereignty, community, history and truth."

Three addresses are being presented in Canberra. 'Address to the Nations' is aiming to present ten in total. Further project information is available online at www.typecastent.com/projects/tomorrows-pasts.
