The Yindjibarndi community is mourning the profound loss of Senior Elder Ms T Daniel, a revered leader, founding member of the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation, and a tireless advocate for First Nations' rights.
Ms Daniel, alongside her late husband, Ngarluma leader Mr D Daniel, and other respected Elders—many of whom have also passed—was instrumental in establishing Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation (NYFL) and other key Ngarda-ngarli (Aboriginal) organisations and movements.
Their shared vision, dedication, and advocacy laid the groundwork for the progress seen today in advancing First Nations' rights and self-determination.
In a statement, the NYFL Board acknowledged Ms Daniel's extraordinary contributions, emphasising that her leadership and cultural strength will remain a guiding force for the community.
Her legacy continues to inspire ongoing efforts to uphold and celebrate the rights, culture, and future of the Ngarda-ngarli people.
In accordance with Ngarda-ngarli grieving protocols, the community has entered a period of mourning. Families will gather in Ieramugadu (Roebourne), as cultural lore requires, to honour Ms Daniel's life and contributions.
The NYFL Board extended heartfelt gratitude to those who have expressed their condolences, offered support, and stood in solidarity with Ms Daniel's family and the Ieramugadu community during this challenging time.
As the community grieves the loss of such a remarkable Elder, there is also an opportunity to celebrate her enduring legacy. Her path of leadership, cultural strength, and advocacy has paved the way for future generations, the organisation said.
The NYFL Board encourages all stakeholders to honour Ms Daniel's memory by continuing to advance the rights and vision of the Ngarda-ngarli community, noting that her impact will be felt for generations to come.
