Hundreds of people on the Tiwi Islands are set to be without electricity for days after a fire broke out at the local power station at the weekend.

Around 370 are expected to be without power for at least three days, according to Northern Territory emergency information and alert service SecureNT updates on Monday.

The fire started at around 11pm on Saturday evening, causing 'extensive' damage to Pirlangimpi power station on the western coast of Yermalner (Melville Island).

No one was significantly injured, with the cause of the fire remaining unknown.

Power and water crews flew to Pirlangimpi on Sunday to assess the damage, and will continue restoration work this week.

There are multiple power stations providing electricity to various communities across the Tiwi Islands.

Generators are being transported to Pirlangimpi as soon as possible, SecureNT said on Monday, with Telstra commencing work to install a back-up option to restore its network there.

Water and sewage services are said to remain secure.

According to Tiwi Islands Regional Council, functional testing was scheduled at the power station to enhance safety and reliability as recently as August 13.

The Council advised community members to check in on Elders, families with young children and neighbours on Monday morning.

On Sunday afternoon NT Government-owned providers Power and Water Corporation advised "do not open fridges and freezers unnecessarily and be aware of food that may have spoiled. Do not eat. Updates will be provided as more information is available."

A Pirlangimpi Local Authority meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been relocated an hour's drive east to Milikapiti.
