Richmond small forward Maurice Rioli Jr has returned to the senior side with renewed confidence and purpose after a mid-season stint in the club's VFL team.
A mix of form and injury has seen Rioli spend seven matches at VFL level in 2025, where he gained valuable experience in the midfield and added another dimension to his game.
Since earning a recall for the Tigers' Round 17 clash with Geelong, Rioli has showcased his trademark defensive pressure whilst proving he can impact contests higher up the ground.
He produced a career-best 19 disposals and six inside-50s after replacing injured teenager Sam Lalor as the medical substitute against the Cats, then backed it up with a solid performance in the following week's win over Essendon.
Last week against West Coast Rioli was again impactful, including what has been considered by some as the tackle of the season in the Tiger's 49-point victory.
The moment came early in the first quarter when the Eagles' Brady Hough broke from the back square, with Rioli trailing about 10 metres behind.
After three bounces through the corridor, Hough was about to enter the forward 50 when Rioli launched a desperate dive, forcing a turnover which resulted in a goal to teammate Tim Taranto.
Richmond coach Adem Yze praised the moment as a turning point in the match.
"Maurice Rioli's run-down was the spark we needed," Yze said after the win.
"From that moment I felt like our game was in really good shape."

Speaking to Richmond Media post-game, Rioli reflected on the moment.
"I just saw him out there by himself in the middle and I thought I'd just give it a crack and hopefully I'll get to him," he said.
"Obviously, I got to him, and it was an unreal feeling – teammates getting around me made it pretty special as well."
Rioli produced another big play in the second quarter, this time smothering a kick from West Coast defender Harry Edwards and setting up a goal for captain Toby Nankervis.
"It was a big, key defender, so I thought he was going to get the ball away," he said.
"I thought I'd go through the smother here and I read it pretty well.
"I was going to have a shot until I saw Toby (Nankervis) there, so I thought I'd just give it to him, the skipper, and thankfully he finished the goal."
The 22-year-old, who is currently in his fifth season at the club, credited instinct and a team-first mindset for his ability to produce momentum-changing moments.
"It just comes on instinct – when I'm out there I just play and those things come," he said.
"That's what I bring to the team, and I just love doing that kind of stuff, those kind of acts.
"It's pretty special."
Rioli has played 44 games and kicked 30 goals since being selected by Richmond under the father-son rule in the 2020 AFL Draft.
