The Western Australian Institute of Sport have become the first body to remove Barry Cable from their honours list following a WA district court finding the former football great sexually abused a young girl over a number of years during his career.

Last week, Judge Mark Herron found Cable groomed and persistently sexually abused the woman from the age of 12 onwards, starting in the 1960's.

The 79-year-old was ordered to pay damages of $818,700.

Cable has not been charged as a result of the civil case.

He has denied the allegations against him.

Pressure has mounted on sporting organisations recognising Cable with honours to strip the former WAFL and North Melbourne premiership winner of accolades following the ruling.

"If you sexually abuse children in your spare time, and molest them in a spa in your backyard while you are a coach of an AFL team, then you're not fit for a sporting hall of fame or any other sort of honour," the lawyer representing the woman who initiated the civil proceedings, Michael Magazanik, said last week.

"It's not controversial. It's time for anyone who has glorified Cable to face the sickening truth and act accordingly."

In a short statement on Thursday, WAIS confirmed their decision to remove Cable from the Western Australian Hall of Champions.

"The Western Australian Hall of Champions notes the legal judgements recently released regarding one of our inductees, Mr Barry Cable," Hall of Champions selection committee chairman David Hatt said.

"As a result of these findings the Hall has decided to withdraw Mr Cable from its membership as of today."

Cable won multiple Sandover medals as the WAFL's best player over a season alongside multiple premierships between the WAFL and VFL.

The AFL are reportedly set to remove Cable from the Australian Football Hall of Fame next week following their 2023 induction ceremony.

Rules allowing the committee to suspend or revoke Hall of Fame membership status from individuals who have been convicted of an indictable offence or have engaged in conduct which is detrimental to the game are due to come into effect after the ceremony on June 27.

Cable was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member in 1996 and elevated to Legend status in 2012.

It is understood Cable has been urged to resign from the Hall.

The West Australian Football Commission and Sport Australia Hall of Fame are also said to be reviewing Cable's honours with them.

In 2005 Cable was named in the AFL's Indigenous team of the century as a player and coach.
