Grants open to support healthy communities in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area

Torres Strait Regional Authority's Healthy Communities Grants are now open with grants starting from $10,000 available to support healthy and active communities across the Torres Strait region, including Bamaga and Seisia in the Northern Peninsula Area.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said the grants would go towards local activities supporting improved access to affordable fresh and healthy foods, alongside initiatives to encourage more active and healthy lifestyles in communities.

"TSRA's Healthy Communities Grants will help more local people kick health goals, keep active and enjoy happier, healthier lives," Mr Nona said.

"We hope to receive plenty of applications with ideas, initiatives and projects to support healthy and active communities, including from sporting and community organisations across the region.

"I encourage individuals, groups and organisations to bring your ideas to the table and apply now."

Example activities include:

Innovative health and wellbeing initiatives to support Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people to live long and healthy lives through:

- regular participation in healthy lifestyle and physical activity

- improved access to healthy and affordable food for all families

- increased information and awareness to enable families to make healthy choices

Preventative health and wellbeing programs and activities;

Capacity building within local communities to lead, manage and deliver health and wellbeing initiatives;

Targeted initiatives and activities for youth and young people, including those that are designed and led by young people;

Online healthy lifestyle programs and awareness campaigns;

Social and emotional wellbeing initiatives, projects and programs with a particular emphasis for youth and young people, people with a disability and the LGBTIQ+ community;

Appropriate research targeting local and regional data gaps, with a view to empowering and building strong, healthy and resilient communities;

Place-based approaches that directly support improving local outcomes under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap; and

Minor health infrastructure upgrades open only to eligible organisations/local government entities who own and manage community assets.

TSRA's Healthy Communities Program aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal families and individuals residing in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.
