Richmond assistant coach Xavier Clarke has been shortlisted for the club's vacant senior coaching position.

The Larrakia and Amrreamo/Marritjavin man has spent the past six seasons at the Tigers, playing an integral role in the club's recent premiership success.

It was reported by the AFL's Josh Gabelich that Clarke was shortlisted to be formally interviewed for the job as Richmond's senior coach.

The former St Kilda and Brisbane Lions player told SEN's Fridays in the Top End late last year being the senior coach of an AFL team would be a 'dream'.

"I'd love to be able to coach my own team one day, there's no doubt about that," Clarke said.

After leading the NT Thunder to the 2015 NEAFL premiership, Clarke arrived at the Tigers at the end of the 2016 season and took up a position as development coach.

He spent the following couple of seasons in that role and would also lead the club's VFL team before eventually moving into his current position as a forwards coach.

The assistant coach said that the Tigers have been supportive of his coaching development.

"I'm enjoying it, the club has been fantastic and they always promote from within, which has been really good," Clarke said.

"It's been fantastic to be able to work with guys like Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt and Shai Bolton."

Clarke was taken by St Kilda with selection five in the 2001 AFL National Draft after a brilliant junior career with Northern Territory Football League club St Mary's.

A skilful utility, he had a promising start to his AFL career with 16 games in his first season and an AFL Rising Star nomination.

Clarke went on to play 105 games for the Saints and added one more with Brisbane in a career that was largely plagued with injury.

After finishing at AFL level, he returned home to play a starring role in a premiership for junior club St Mary's before beginning his coaching career with the NT Thunder.

The Tigers coaching job was left vacant midway through the season after triple premiership winning coach Damien Hardwick announced his resignation.

Current caretaker coach Andrew McQualter and Hawthorn assistant Chris Newman are understood to be other candidates for the position.

If successful, Clarke will be the third Indigenous senior coach in VFL/AFL history.

Interviews are expected to take place over the next fortnight.
