Brittney Henderson says now is the time for someone like them to take their place in Victoria's Parliament.

12 months out from the state election, on Saturday the Greens will announce Henderson, 24, as their preselected candidate for Western Metropolitan in the upper house.

It's a region which has been "neglected" by the government, the Wiradjuri Bunurong candidate said, often represented by politicians "parachuted in", and deserves something different.

Young First Nations Victorians, particularly those at "intersections", like members of the queer community and also people living with a disability, are similarly deserving of having someone in Parliament represent them, Henderson told National Indigenous Times.

"I think the current Parliament has no real meaningful way of representing those intersections and putting policies into practice means nothing if you don't have real, lived experience backing those policies and informing those policies."

For Henderson, the question is, "if not now, when?" when it comes to queer Aboriginal representation at Parliament House.

"I want to be demanding the policies on the floor," they said.

On gaining preselection, Henderson has flagged inequality - both statewide and in Melbourne's west - social justice, and the climate as central to their campaign.

They're also pinpointing the region's Western Grasslands Reserve.

In 2010, the Victorian government committed to a major land acquisition of 15,000 hectares for its preservation and restoration, including local threatened species, stretching between metropolitan Melbourne's outskirts and Wyndham City and across Wadawurrung, Bunurong and Wurundjeri country.

Fifteen years on, the state government has purchased only 26 per cent for the land.

It's a concern close to Henderson's heart, and something happening on their Country.

"I want to demand that we actually make good on that promise, and specifically build on that policy to say that Bunurong people, Wadawurrung people, Wurundjeri people, are front and centre on managing the conservation site," they said.

Henderson also raised building more infrastructure for young people in Melbourne's west - particularly raising the lack of community organisations and structures for queer Aboriginal people.

Chair of Aboriginal-led and LGBTIQA+SB(Sistagirl Brotherboy)-led first aid service and training group Deadly Sports Plus, Henderson has also worked with a number of Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations.

In the lead up to this year's federal election, they worked in the Greens campaign for a local seat of Fraser, where Huong Truong missed out to Labor's Daniel Mulino.

Henderson said there is growing excitement for the party for which they'll lead the upper house ticket in the region.

"I think there's such an opportunity to build on that momentum post the federal election," they told National Indigenous Times.

The Greens have previously had success in Western Metropolitan.

On its creation in 2006, Colleen Hartland was elected there for the party, later handing over to Ms Truong who unsuccessfully contested the 2018 state election.

Labor's Lizzie Blandthorn and Ingrid Stitt, Liberal Trung Luu, Legalise Cannabis Victoria's David Ettershank, and Moira Deeming are the current members.

"I'm a proud Wiradjuri Bunurong person, born and raised in the West by a big, staunch queer Aboriginal family. That upbringing has defined who I am - it taught me resilience, solidarity and the importance of community. Those are the values I want to bring into Parliament to fight for our region and for Country," Henderson told National Indigenous Times.

"The West has been ignored for too long. I'm running to change that - to back community-led organisations, protect our native grasslands, and tackle the intergenerational inequality that leaves young people locked out of housing, security and a safe climate."
