Kozzy Pickett wants to inspire the next generation and make history in February's return of the AFL's best First Nations players coming together under one banner.
The 23-year-old had barely started high school when the Indigenous All Stars last played.
Pickett told National Indigenous Times he's eager to see the fixture return as a regular on the AFL calendar, honouring the league's First Nations talent.
One of ten names already announced in Michael O'Loughlin and Xavier Clarke's squad to play Fremantle on February 15, Pickett said he put his hand up for selection pretty early.
"These are the types of games you look forward to. You know, I watched a lot of these games growing up, you see all the highlights from the boys that played in the past. It's just a really exciting thing to be a part of," Pickett told National Indigenous Times.
It's more than a game of footy for Pickett, who said "it's culture based".
"We all come out to represent our culture, our families. I just want to inspire the next generation...more Indigenous boys and girls to be inspired by this game, so then we can have more superstars coming through the ranks," he said.
"For a lot of people, a lot of Indigenous people…a lot of their favourite players will be playing. For me to get this opportunity, I'm just grateful. To get to be in the team, for starters, and be alongside some superstars. We've got a lot of great players in AFL."
Pickett said Indigenous talent across the league is sure to make picking the final side a tough task for selectors.
"We've all got those skills that no one really possesses," Pickett said.
Premiership Lions Charlie Cameron and Callum Ah Chee, 2023 Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill, Liam Ryan, Bradley Hill, Izak Rankine, Jarman Impey are already confirmed squad members.
Dockers Shai Bolton, Alex Pearce and Michael Walters will also switch allegiance for the match.
He said future years can be an opportunity to spread the love amongst those who might miss out.
"I'm sure they'll still be happy to see us boys pull on the guernsey," PIckett added.
"I put my hand up pretty quickly. I heard it's been in the talks for a few years now, I put my hand up as soon as I heard. I was very excited to be a part of this, and it's gonna gonna be a part of history, really."
At clubland, Kozzy said there's good signs of drive amongst the group to correct a slide out of the eight in 2024.
The 23-year-old said he has personally hit a new level of preparation during the players's break, aiming to "maximise my minutes" in the Dees centre group next year.
"I always love going into midfield, being around the ball. It's always good fun," the predominant forward said, after another 35 goal-plus campaign.
Category B Rookie pickup Ricky Mentha is also looking the goods in his first preseason with the Demons.
"He's a good young kid. He's quiet, but he's gonna be a good one. He's skilled, he's talented and he's learned about hard work," Pickett said.
