Scott Boland has retained his place in Australia's test squad for the upcoming tour of England.

The Gulidjan seamer is one of 17 players selected for the Australian squad to compete in the ICC World Test Championship final and opening two Ashes tests at Edgbaston and Lords.

Boland held his position in the squad having played only one match in Australia's most recent test series against India, which Australia lost 1-2.

After returning to Australia early from the subcontinental tour, Boland did his grounds for selection no harm, taking a season's best eight wickets in his return to first class cricket for Victoria in the final round of the Sheffield Shield season.

Aside from the non-selection of Lance Morris, who has been ruled out with injury Boland and the remaining pace bowling contingent of Australia's squad remains relatively unchanged.

However the squad has a number of new faces, with the National Selection Panel making a raft of changes following the Border-Gavankar Trophy series loss to India.

Omissions from the squad include spinners Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann along with Peter Handscomb, who has also been overlooked.

Replacing them are opener Marcus Harris, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis and allrounder Mitchell Marsh, with National Performance Squad Chair of Selectors George Bailey suggesting expected conditions played a part in changes to the squad.

"The UK is a very different assignment from our most recent tour of India and some of the changes are based upon the conditions we are anticipating," Bailey said.

It will be the first time Australia will contest a World Test Championship final.

"The World Test Championship is the culmination of more than two years of consistent performance at Test level by the team and the individuals involved, leading into an Ashes series which is always highly anticipated.

Boland burst onto the test scene in Australia's previous Ashes series, where he took 18 wickets at an average of 9.55 including 6-7 on debut during the Boxing Day Test.

Australia will face India in the World Test Championships at The Oval on 7 June before the Ashes commence at Edgbaston on 16 June.
