Poised to add another notch to their belt at the upcoming Murri vs Koori Interstate Challenge are the formidable Brisbane Natives Open Women's squad, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.
Next Saturday the Natives Open Women's team will face off against the Dunghutti ConneXions in Beenleigh at the Murri vs Koori Interstate Challenge.
Lead by Koa / Kaku Yalanji woman Patrice Chambers, the Natives enter 2023 with high hopes and spirits hot on the heels of their three-peat championship win at last year's Queensland Murri Carnival.
This year is the first time the Interstate Challenge has held an open women's match before the mens and they have curated a very exciting match.
Natives Hooker/Dummy Half Chambers told the National Indigenous Times that "it's a big moment for us girls."
"We always play for each other every time we take the field but we are playing for the girls who couldn't take the field due to injury,
"We are also dedicating part of our jersey to Aunty Conor Cleary who we sadly lost last year - who was a life member of Brisbane Natives.
"She gave us a blessing to go ahead with a women's team in 2014," she said.
Natives secretary and graphic designer Aunty Elaine Chambers noted this is a special year for the club as they celebrate 50 years and continue to grow a strong community within the organisation.
The Natives will face off against the ConnXions at 4:15pm on Bill Norris Oval who are also coming in fresh off a championship win at the Koori Knockout.
Patrice Chambers is predicting a close game based on what she's seen from the ConnXions so far.
"They're a strong side with a lot of experience, and they have a really good back line from what I had seen last year," she said.
"I think it will be a very close game - I'm thinking 10 or 12 points the difference.
"regardless of the score I'm just excited to see heaps of mob out having a good day and watching some footy."
