Papua New Guinea's under-19 men's cricket team's tour of Brisbane has been delayed due to the impact of Cyclone Alfred.
The Garamuts were to tour Brisbane from March 14-24, scheduled to play a minimum of four matches against selected Queensland teams at various grade cricket grounds through a memorandum of understanding between Cricket PNG and Cricket Queensland.
Now rescheduled to March 21-31, the side's Brisbane tour forms part of preparations for the ICC Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup East Asia-Pacific Division 1 Qualifier in Japan next month.
Garamuts captain, Gaba Frank, said his side remained positive about preparations ahead of the qualifier tournament.
"The team is focused, and the players have been working hard and, even with this schedule change, we are committed to maintaining our intensity in training and making the most of our tour to Brisbane," Frank said, The National reports.
The side's Brisbane tour was made possible through the Australian Government's PacificAus Sports partnership with Cricket Australia, an initiative supporting high-performance cricket across the Pacific while strengthening cricket connections in the region.
Garamuts coach, Kila Pala, said the side has undergone a significant amount of preparation ahead of the tour and qualifying tournament.
"Morning sessions are for non-students, while students training in the afternoons," Pala said.
"Our schedule includes turf training on Wednesdays, centre wicket sessions on Thursdays, light training on Fridays, and full 50-over matches on weekends."
The 24-member training squad was recently trimmed to 18, with selectors retaining the same leadership group from the Garamuts' successful ICC East Asia-Pacific Division 2 Qualifier in August last year.
Frank, a right-arm leg spinner and left-handed batsman, said following success in the Division 2 Qualifier, his side has made a significant improvement to their training standards.
"The players have stepped up with more commitment and effort in training, focusing on skill-building," he said, PNG Post Courier reports.
"Last year I was nervous, but this year I am confident. Seeing the team train hard and smart with Coach Kila Pala always cheering us on, I know we are ready.
"I am ready to captain our Garamuts team to Australia and later to Japan for the EAP Qualifiers."
The Garamuts will face Japan and Fiji in next month's division 1 qualifier, with the winner qualifying for the World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2026.
