Marlion Pickett has avoided spending more time behind bars after aiding and abetting two friends launder about $300,000 of stolen money.
The 33-year-old was arrested in June 2023 and charged with 12 offences in relation to a number of commercial burglaries.
The now former Richmond player was involved in a spate of ransacking of safes across a number of currency exchange businesses following the end of the 2022 AFL season.
Pickett, who had been granted bail, was able to continue playing until the end of 2024 before his legal team was able to negotiate a deal in which all but two of the charges were dropped.
He pleaded guilty to both charges.
During sentencing on Wednesday a Perth District Court heard Pickett had deteriorated mentally around the time of the offending.
The court heard Pickett was plagued with thoughts about deceased family members lost to suicide.
Two friends who reached out to Pickett to help them launder money, the court was told, were the catalyst for his relapse into the use of meth and were charged with a more serious role in the crimes.
Judge Laurence Levy described Pickett's role as "wilful blindness".
Pickett received a two-year sentence, suspended for 12 months, on two charges of received, possessed, concealed, disposed of or dealt with any money or other property off the proceeds of an offence that carried a maximum penalty of 20 years.
Picket said outside the court he wanted to be "a person that people can look up to and do the best for them".
