On Friday, Alt-rock band Selve launched their album, Red Desert Dream, along with a visual album, marking a significant development in the local music scene.

Their singles have earned spots on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist, and the film clips from the visual album have been showcased on Rage.

Selve is lead by Jabirr Jabirr man, Loki Liddle (Lead Singer/Songwriter), Aniwan man, Reece Bowden (Bass/Guitar/Vocals), Creation Saffigna (Vocals/Percussion), Michael Baldi (Drums), Liam Kirk (Keyboards) and features vital contributions and compositions from former member Harry Edwards (Bass/Guitar), who are known for their live shows at Woodford Folk Festival, BLAK DAY OUT, Springtime, Brisbane Festival and BIGSOUND.

Red Desert Dream marks a milestone in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music, showcasing the musical talents of Selve and the creative vision of writer and director and pround Gubbi Gubbi / Wiradjuri woman, Alethea Beetson.

Lead Singer, Liko Liddle spearheaded the concept of the album, with contributions from all Selve band members in its production.

Red Desert Dream highlights the lead singer's adept songwriting style in a narrative album that underscores a musical maturity well beyond their age.

"Red Desert Dream is a deeply personal yet universal story about following one's calling," said Loki Liddle of Selve.

"For me that means connecting with community and following the path carved by mob before me, whether that be in music or in going back home to country, which for me is Broome."

Working with Alethea has been an enriching process for Selve lead singer/songwriter Loki Liddle, who is also the co-producer of the short film, as they both continue to carve a path of truth-telling within their narratives as artists and co-dreamers.

"To have this story, which is so precious to me, now have a visual life that is beyond anything I ever imagined means so much to me," Mr Liddle said.

Adding to the narrative of Red Desert Dream the album, this cinematic work is full of suspense, intrigue and a visual tapestry that can only be described as a reclamatory assault to the senses.

"Deep time and the concept of ancestral fate plays a central role in the narrative of Red Desert Dream's visual album," Ms Beetson said.

"Being gifted the opportunity to tell a story from the stimulus that is Selve's music allowed for me to return the gesture with an equally playful and multi-layered visual story."

The album was independently recorded at Selve Studios between 2021 and 2022, with collaboration from producer Simon Benesch, contributing to its distinct sound.

The visual album of Red Desert Dream marks the inaugural project for Blak Social's new initiative, "Blak Narrative Music Videos (BNMV): Volume 1".

This pilot program, supported by Arts Queensland, is aimed at fostering collaboration between First Nations creatives and Indigenous musicians to produce visual content within the context of contemporary music.

It also aims to enhance career opportunities within the First Nations music and film industries, offering a pathway for First Nations theatre professionals, visual artists, and digital designers.

Red Desert Dream is being released by Blak Social Records - a record and distribution company led by Alethea Beetson and Loki Liddle that employs a sovereign model of label services and artist management to support and protect First Nations ownership of stories and music.
