St Kilda young gun Marcus Windhager is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Saints announced the 21-year-old will be sent for surgery tomorrow after aggravating the muscle at training last week.

Windhager has not played since suffering the injury in the Saints' thrilling two-point win over Sydney at Marvel Stadium in Round 17.

He was initially expected to return during the latter stages of the season, however the club has instead decided to send the young midfielder for surgery.

"This is a frustrating development for Marcus as he was close to making a return to play," the Saints' Executive General Manager of Football David Misson said.

"The plan is that by getting him in for surgery now, Marcus will have the best opportunity to attack pre-season and set himself up for a full 2025."

Windhager is in his third season at the club and has established himself as hard-working and determined on-baller.

This season, St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has given Windhager tagging roles on some of the best midfielders in the game including Zac Butters, Lachie Neale and Touk Miller.

In other injury news, Adelaide defender Wayne Milera is making strong progress in his rehabilitation after being ruled out for the season with a ruptured patella tendon.

Milera has not played since injuring his knee against Fremantle in Round 3 but he is expected to resume running on grass early next week.

Adelaide High Performance Manager Darren Burgess provided an update earlier this week.

"Wayne ran on the ultra-g on Monday which was exciting, and he got through that really well, so he'll do that again on Friday," Burgess said.

"It's pretty exciting for Wayne, he's been through a pretty tough period, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel so that's great.

"He'll be out with the boys next Monday running on the track so that will give everybody a lift coming into the last week of the season."

Burgess was full of praise for the way Milera has approached his rehabilitation.

"Junior is one of the most professional guys we have here, he's attacked everything really well and the rehab staff have done a great job with him, we still expect it to still be a process from here, but he's done superbly," he said.

"We expect Wayne to be back for most of pre-season, he might miss the first couple of weeks but given the length of time he's had off to build up the strength we think he'll be able to do the majority of pre-season."

The news is not as positive for injury-prone Carlton utility Jack Martin, who is likely to miss one to two weeks with a minor hamstring strain.

Collingwood's Ash Johnson has entered the AFL's concussion protocols after colliding with the turf during the Magpies' VFL match against Sydney.

Fremantle's Michael Walters is likely to return this weekend with the Dockers' High Performance Manager Phil Merriman confirming his availability.

"Sonny (Walters) is going really well," Merriman said.

"As I've been saying, he's going to be fit when he comes back, and he will be available this week."
