Western Australian children and young people are being called on to help create an Acknowledgement of Country that reflects their voices by the state's child commissioner.
Noongar Woman Tracey Ninyette, the Commissioner for Children and Young People in WA said the aim of the project, in line with this year's theme for Youth Week WA—"Our Threads, This Place, Your Moment"—is to "encourage children and young people to think about their connection to community and each other".
"It's not just about words—it's about growing understanding and respect. Every Acknowledgment created by a child is a small but powerful act of reconciliation," she said.
"It's the perfect activity for school holidays and I encourage parents and carers to get your children and young people involved in this initiative."
Children are encouraged, through words and/or drawings, to be creative and sincere in sharing their respect for the Traditional Custodians of the land they stand on, as well as the continuing connection for Indigenous people to Country, land, and waters.
It is a chance for children and young people to reflect on their thoughts and values and do some research—or even start a conversation amongst friends and family.
Commissioner Ninyette and her team will choose and combine the selected entries to then create an Acknowledgement which will be used going forward by the organisation.
Furthermore, all submissions will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a $50 kids/teen voucher.
"It really is a special project. I am looking forward to seeing the submissions and creating an Acknowledgement of Country that reflects the shared voices of WA children and young people," Commissioner Ninyette said.
"I want everyone to write or draw whatever comes to them. Get creative!
"As an advocate for all children and young people across WA, I am passionate about having their views and voices shine through the work that we do."
Entry is free and open to all WA children and young people aged under 18 years. Entries can be submitted online until Wednesday, 14 May.
