A cultural leader from Western Australia's Kimberley is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two women related to separate incidents in 2021 and 2022.

Thomas Edgar, 68, is listed as director of Broome Traditional Owner member organisation Yawuru Prescribed Body Corporate.

On Thursday, Edgar was remanded in custody after a jury found him guilty of sexual penetration without consent on two occasions following a four-day trial at a Broome court, as reported by ABC.

The court heard a woman staying with Edgar woke up to him sexually assaulting her at a Broome property in 2021.

She said she was intoxicated at the time.

The court heard a second woman, also staying with Edagr, woke up in the early hours of the morning with Edgar lying beside her in September 2022.

According to ABC, she told a triple zero operator that morning "I think I've been touched in my sleep" and had been drinking the night before.

Edgar had previously pleaded not guilty to both matters.

Senior Constable Sarah Darling reportedly testified the second woman was able to identify Edgar as the person to assault her.

A number of witnesses presented during the trial, including police, hospital staff who treated the women and the victims themselves.

According to ABC, Edgar submitted he had sexually penetrated both women, but that he was not the initiator of either incident.

Defence lawyer David Robinson reportedly made arguments around one victim's awareness of the incident involving her and Edgar, and that the other was dishonest about her drinking on the night.

State prosecutor Cameron Henderson told the jury "we say they were very intoxicated, but the main issue was they were asleep" in his closing statements, and triple zero calls made by both women shortly after the incidents spoke to their credibility.

The jury found Edgar guilty on two counts of sexual assault on Thursday afternoon.

Judge Linda Petrusa did not grant the defence's request for bail.

Edgar is due to be sentenced on April 18.
