Roebourne District High School is about to unveil the first stage of its much-anticipated $72.4 million redevelopment, bringing a wave of fresh opportunities to students in the Pilbara.

WA Premier Roger Cook toured the upgraded school on Wednesday, highlighting the new facilities set to open in time for Term 1 next month. Among the upgrades are a primary school, language centre, multipurpose hall, performing arts space, student services, and a cafeteria.

The redevelopment is years ahead of schedule, the government noted, with the final touches—such as a new library, science learning spaces, and additional landscaping—expected well before the original September 2026 deadline.

But the upgrades are about more than just new buildings. With a strong focus on celebrating and integrating Aboriginal culture, the redevelopment is designed to connect students with their heritage while enriching their educational experience.

The second phase, assisted by Woodside Energy's $20 million contribution through the Cook Government's Resources Community Investment Initiative (RCII), will take things to "the next level", the government said.

Plans include classrooms for tailored advisory programs, spaces for pastoral care, and dedicated areas for Aboriginal Islander education officers and support services. These additions aim to empower students academically while strengthening cultural ties, ensuring they stay engaged through their senior years.

Mr Cook highlighted the significance of the Roebourne District High School redevelopment, praising its strong focus on community engagement to meet local needs and aspirations.

"This is an incredible project, with significant community engagement ensuring the Roebourne District High School community's needs and aspirations were incorporated into its development," he said.

"It's fantastic to see the progress that has been made ahead of students returning to school for Term 1, which is a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved.

"This redevelopment will significantly enhance the educational experience of local students here in Roebourne, providing them with state-of-the-art facilities that honour and integrate their cultural heritage.

WA Minister for Education and Aboriginal Affairs, Dr Tony Buti, said he was "thrilled" that staff and students are now able to benefit from all the new facilities and additions at the school.

"This has been a collaborative effort to ensure that students and staff have a high-quality learning environment to be proud of, and also a strong connection to Aboriginal history, culture and language," he said.
