Clover Moore is set to extend her two-decade long reign as Sydney Lord Mayor, seeing off a vibrant challenge from Yvonne Weldon.

Cr Weldon couldn't break the Mayor's hold on the office but at the close of counting on Saturday night looked set to be re-elected to Council.

The Wiradjuri woman was the first Indigenous person voted on to Sydney Council in its 180 year history.

On Saturday, before polls closed, Cr Weldon said she has been "very heartened by the response today and during this election".

"I'm proud of our positive and community-led campaign," she said.

Cr Weldon campaigned on a range of important local issues.

Early in the campaign she told National Indigenous Times she planned to "make sure that the city is inclusive and vibrant and humming with opportunity and accessible for all".

"We need to actually have more affordable housing, accelerate a green economy, and also make sure that our creatives and artists and our local businesses actually continue to exist," she said.

"One of the things I've been raising is around what does affordable rental housing look like, and why are we not having that built on site with the developments?

"There's always such a major lag in trying to get affordable and social housing, and more of it, and yet we see these developments just pop up everywhere.

"And why are we not making sure that those developers that are making lots of money actually start to build some of that affordable housing on site?"

Cr Weldon also spoke on the importance of revitalising Oxford Street, and on the role households and businesses could play in the Council's 2035 net zero targets; with rates rebates a potential incentive.

She raised the issue of honouring Indigenous leaders in the city, noting: "I think that in the city we need to actually have true representation of the people that represent so much more of what took place in the past, but so much more of what needs to continue into the future of our history, and now truth-telling."

Cr Weldon also proposing removing the word "Lord" from the title Lord Mayor.

"I will be a mayor of the people and will serve them rather than preside over them...it's about walking with them not thinking that you're superior to them," she said.
