The death of a man in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands on Sunday is "not suspicious," South Australian Police say.

Police said they had responded to reports of "a large group of people fighting" at Pukatja (Ernabella), 30 km from the Northern Territory border.

Following the altercation, a 59-year-old man from Pukatja — believed to have been involved in the altercation — sought medical attention at the town clinic.

"While receiving treatment, he subsequently died," police said in a statement.

Initially, police said they were investigating whether the man died "as a result of a medical episode". However, on Monday afternoon, they provided an update.

"Following an investigation into the man's death, including a post-mortem examination, police have determined that his death is not suspicious and was not related to the disturbance," police said.

"A report will be prepared for the Coroner."

Police say they are treating the event as a "violent disturbance" and have remained at the scene to speak with those involved and community members.

Members of the public with information are asked to contact Crime Stoppers online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au or on 1800 333 000.
