The Australian Greens First Nations Network has thrown its support behind the leadership bid of NSW senator Mehreen Faruqi.
In a meeting on Monday, the Network endorsed Senator Mehreen Faruqi as the next leader of the Australian Greens, and also resolved to "bring or support proposals to National Council or to National Conference on a mechanism for the membership electing the Australian Greens parliamentary leader".
According to 6 News, both proposals were passed by consensus.
Senator Faruqi is the current Deputy Leader of the Greens, with Senator Nick McKim 'interim leader'.
At present, the Australian Greens parliamentary party leader is chosen by the Greens members of parliament, similar to the ALP, Liberal and National Party's mechanisms.
The now largely defunct Australian Democrats elected their parliamentary leaders by party membership vote, as does the UK Labour Party.
The Australian Greens hold eleven senate seats and the balance of power in the senate in their own right, and one House of Representatives seat, the Queensland electorate of Ryan.
The former Greens leader Adam Bandt lost his seat of Melbourne at the recent federal election, having held it for 15 years.
