Northern New South Wales' Bundjalung Tribal Society will celebrate 50 years of service, advocacy and cultural strength at a community event next month.
The event, set to be held on Friday 3 May at the Lismore Workers Sports Club, will recognise five decades of Bundjalung-led leadership in housing, land rights, and cultural preservation.
The 50th anniversary celebration will be an evening of reflection, celebration and connection, bringing together Elders, community members, partners and supporters to honour the past and look forward to the future.
Bundjalung Tribal Society (Bundjalung) chairperson Tracey King said the organisation is proud to have supported Aboriginal people in New South Wales' Northern Rivers region since the mid 1970s.
"We are incredibly proud to be celebrating 50 years of Bundjalung strength and survival," Ms King said.
"This event is an opportunity to pay tribute to our Elders, recognise our history, and celebrate the ongoing work of our people to maintain culture and community."
Founded in 1975, the Bundjalung Tribal Society has played a vital role in supporting community through land rights advocacy, cultural preservation, housing initiatives, and grassroots leadership, with the upcoming occasion recognising five decades of tireless work in advancing the rights, housing, culture, and self-determination of the Bundjalung people.
Bundjalung provides Aboriginal community-controlled housing, ensuring Bundjalung families have access to safe, secure, and culturally connected homes on Country, while also offering a holistic service model and wraparound support which addresses social, emotional, and practical needs by walking alongside community to strengthen wellbeing, resilience, and opportunity.
Ahead of next month's celebration, Bundjalung are inviting local businesses, organisations and supporters to sponsor the landmark event, with sponsorship opportunities available for those who wish to stand alongside the Northern Rivers Aboriginal community and show their support for Aboriginal-led leadership and cultural continuity.
"We welcome sponsors who want to walk with us on this journey and help make our 50th anniversary a truly special and meaningful celebration," Ms King said.
Bundjalung says at the heart of its work is the ongoing revitalisation and celebration of Bundjalung culture, with the Society empowering community through cultural programs, protection of sacred sites, support for language and knowledge holders, and by fostering intergenerational connections.
As part of its commitment to healing and community strength, Bundjalung Tribal Society is also home to Namabunda, a community space and program that brings together culture, connection, and care, while remaining a key supporter of strong and self-determined future for Bundjalung people.
