Brisbane Lions star Ally Anderson has produced a sensational start to her ninth AFLW season which has included a record-breaking performance in her team's win over Melbourne at the weekend.

The Gangulu woman had the ball on a string in last Saturday's game, registering 43 disposals to break the all-time record for the most disposals recorded in an AFLW game.

Anderson's coach Craig Starcevich has marvelled at the fact that her player is seemingly getting better every season.

"She just keeps getting better," Starcevich told AFL.com.au.

"So it's a great lesson for everyone really that just because you've played eight or nine years, that you haven't reached your peak and you can always find some improvement.

"I keep seeing her physically improve year on year, you think someone in their late 20s, early 30s, shouldn't be gaining physically."

Anderson's 43 disposals broke the previous record which has been held by North Melbourne's Ash Riddell since Round 10, 2022.

The 30-year-old gathered 28 kicks, 15 handballs, six marks, seven clearances and seven tackles in the Lions' 5.3 (33) to 2.3 (15) win.

She had over double the amount of disposals as the nearest player on the ground and over half of her possessions were contested.

A typically humble Anderson played down her performance and praised her teammates' ability to bounce back after a disappointing loss in the opening round to North Melbourne.

"To be honest, I didn't even realise until they said it at the end," Anderson told AFL.com.au.

"But it's such a team effort.

"It definitely was a hard pill to swallow last week … we're pretty happy with our response to that."

In the opening round against the Kangaroos, Anderson gathered 29 disposals and a massive 15 clearances, which was within once clearance of the AFLW record.

She said a strong fitness and conditioning program at the club has allowed her to have such a great start to the season.

"There's a lot of fitness and a lot of strength that goes into it," Anderson said.

"We're really lucky, we have such a good (strength and conditioning) and medical staff around us, they've been consistent across our eight years, too."

In last week's win, Gunditjmara woman Dakota Davidson was clearly the most damaging forward on the ground and finished with a game-high three goals.

Davidson signed a new deal during the off-season that will see her remain at the Lions until at least the end of the 2027 season.
