Scott Boland has played a key role in Australia's victory in the World Test Championship final overnight.

Boland took 3-46 from 16 overs in in the fourth innings of the match, seeing Australia comfortably defeat India by 209 runs.

Requiring an additional 280 to win, India began day 5 at 3-164 with key batters Virat Kohli (44) and Ajinkya Rahane (20) at the crease.

After sharing a 71-run stand the day previous, there was plenty of optimism that the pair could lead India towards a record-setting chase, however Kohli could only add nine runs to his overnight tally before Boland struck.

The Gulidjan seamer claiming the prized scalp of Indias number 4 in the seventh over of the day's play after Kohli nicked a slightly wider, slightly fuller Boland delivery which was caught spectacularly by Steve Smith at 2nd slip.

Kohli's wicket brought allrounder Ravindra Jadeja to the the crease, who lasted just two balls before Boland found his outside edge, leading to a regulation catch from wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

To end the over Boland nearly had a third wicket in four balls after his first delivery to KS Bharat, a length ball outside off stump bounced steeply, hitting the shoulder of the bat only to balloon over the outstretched hand of David Warner at first slip.

Slumping to 5-179, India never recovered following Boland's double-wicket breakthrough, with Nathan Lyon (4-41) and Mitchell Starc (2-77) cleaning up India's lower order to see the hosts lose 5-55 and bowled out for 234 inside 64 overs.

Following the match, Australian captain Pat Cummins sung Boland's praises after his match-changing performance.

"Scotty Boland was fantastic - he's now my favourite player. He always has been, but he just continues to be my favourite," Cummins said.

Boland ended the one-off final with match figures of 5-105 (2-59 and 3-46) from a combined 36 overs.

"I feel like we're starting to become too used to Scotty Boland just doing that," Cummins said.

"He just keeps finding another level, doesn't he? He's unbelievable. He is just our best bowler all game. Held it together. Didn't go for many runs. Always looked threatening.

"To get those two wickets in a row was just reward for how well he bowled throughout the whole game."

In just eight tests Boland has claimed 33 wickets at an average of 14.57 and economy of 2.31, numbers that have labelled him "undroppable" ahead of the upcoming Ashes series which begins in just five days time.
