The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Aboriginal Corporation board of directors has announced the appointment of experienced health executive Lesley Nelson as its new Acting Chief Executive Officer.

The board said it was "very pleased" to announce Ms Nelson's appointment this week.

"Following a rigorous and transparent recruitment and interview process, the Board carefully considered the leadership qualities, experience and values required to guide Derbarl through its next phase," their announcement stated.

"Lesley clearly demonstrated the capability, integrity and commitment required to lead our organisation and continue strengthening the important work we do for our community.

"Lesley's appointment marks an important step forward as we continue to stabilise the organisation, strengthen our leadership and governance and move Derbarl forward with clarity, confidence and purpose."

The Derbarl Yerrigan board said it is confident Ms Nelson will provide strong leadership and will work closely with staff and community to ensure Derbarl "continues to move in the right direction".

Ms Nelson previously worked as chief executive of the South West Aboriginal Medical Service and was well respected by SWAMS members, who held her work in high regard.

Her dismissal by the SWAMS board sparked a public outcry, and was among factors behind legal action by members which ultimately saw the removal of the SWAMS board.
