A major Indigenous touring exhibition with a connection to Australian animated hit Bluey has launched in the northern suburbs of Boorloo / Perth.

Extending the City of Joondalup's NAIDOC Week celebrations, Two Girls From Amoonguna made its Perth debut at Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery, with intertwining stories by Arrernte and Southern Luritja artist Sally M Nangala Mulda and Western Arrarnta artist Marlene Rubuntja.

The centrepiece is an animated work, Arrkutja Tharra, Kungka Kutjara, Two Girls, created with Ludo Studio, the Emmy Award-winning Brisbane outfit behind the smash cartoon hit on ABC Television.

The work chronicles successes and struggles of the two friends from the Central Desert community of Mparntwe (Alice Springs), alongside bush-dyed and hand-sewn soft sculptures, video and observational paintings.

"Sally M Nangala Mulda and Marlene Rubuntja are accomplished artists and seeing their work brought to life by Ludo was remarkable," said curator and Luritja woman Jenna Rain Warwick.

"Their work speaks to the activist spirit that First People artists hold within them."

Joondalup mayor Daniel Kingston said the touring exhibition was central to the city's extended six-week NAIDOC program this winter, to mark the 2026 national theme 50 Years of Deadly.

"We are proud to host Two Girls From Amoonguna and bring this extraordinary exhibition to Perth audiences for the very first time," the mayor said.

Beyond the gallery, there are other hands-on activities planned for the special celebrations.

Workshops on basket weaving, Aboriginal art, bush flower essence making and family-friendly bush animal weaving (good for the kids) will run every Saturday at Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery, with all activities led by First Nations facilitators and priced from $10-$15 per person.

Two Girls From Amoonguna runs until August 15, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-4pm. Entry is free, with more information and bookings on the City of Joondalup website.
